Northeast Kingdom Trail Conditions

General Northeast Kingdom Trail Conditions

2/2/12
Overall riding is good in the high elevations.  Groomers have been out doing the best that they can with the snow available.  Ride with caution as there are hazards out there still.  You can get some good rides in along the high elevation trails along the gravel roads between Canaan, Norton and Island Pond and points east.

Please note that Corridor Trail 105 between Norton and Derby is closed (EX 16 to EX 30).
Seek alternate routes!

Caledonia County

2/2/12
There is riding in the high elevations.  Itis rated as fair to good in these locations. As the trail loses elevation the snow cover diminishes quickly to a icy, bony base.  Groomers have been out in many areas trying to make the best of the conditions.  If you ride sensibly and with a little common sense you can get a good ride under your belt.  Expect ice and other hazards along the way as conditions do vary a great deal from one area to the next.

Upper Valley Grill will not have gas available until the first week in February. Fillyour tank up before you head for Groton.

We are going to have a slight warm up today into the mid 30's and then dropping back down into the upper teens and mid 20's as the week goes on. Long range forecast is indicating snow flurries for us Tuesday and again on Friday.Snow flurries for us could be anywhere from a dusting to several inches; you just never know until it gets here. The groomers were out last night. The conditions are as follows: the lower elevations in and around our downtown area are fair to good with some icy spots. The mountain trails are good to very good and the old logging road trails are very good to excellent.

The clubs website is www.brightonsnowmobile.org and the Lakefront Motel website is www.thelakefrontinn.com. Their reservation line is 723.6507.

This trail report is done with volunteers and will be updated as new information comes into us. We will keep you informed as best we can.

Trails are fair to good in the high elevations and get a little bony as you lose elevation.  There is ice in many locations and hazards that can be expected.  If you ride with caution and stay in the high elevations you can get in a good ride.

• The Paul Stream Road section of VAST 98 will have to be shared with Logging Trucks between EX 511 (Paul Granby Camp) and Brown’s Mill (junction of the Maidstone Lake Road.

• The SPEED LIMIT…in this LOGGING OPERATION  is 20MPH- MAX SPEED

•When riding through a logging job, STAY AWAY from equipment; Cutter, loaders etc, be sure the operators can see you, stay out of their way , Usually once they complete a task they’ll let you through..be patient it’s their work area, not yours!

• Our 20 MPH SPEED LIMIT along shared roads will be enforced and you can be certain that if there is abuse or an accident the “SHARED ROAD” will likely be closed to sleds !

•SLOW signs really mean SLOW!!

•Speeds in the CONTE REFUGE ARE BEING MONITORED & RECORDED - ENFORCEMENT IS BEING INCREASED! Keep your speed at 35 MPH if you would like to be able to ride through this important and beautiful area!

Orleans County

2/2/12

There is some riding in the high elevations where clubs are grooming, however most of the valley areas and fields have very marginal snow cover and more ice than anything.  Please ride with caution if you head out.  We recommend checking with local clubs for up to date trail conditions before you ride.

Both of the mountain Tuckers went out this past Saturday night and Sunday morning to try to groom the upper mountain trails. Trail conditions are fair to good in most areas. The valley cat has not gone out due to the lack of snow in the fields.

OS27 –OS37- Jay Peak- OS36-OS78- Jay Village- Groomed with drag fair to good conditions still some rocks showing – early riding conditions.

OS27-OS37- OS62- Good conditions on the logging access woods, and fair condition in the woods. Balance Rock road to OS62 is plowed and sleds need to watch for traffic and stay to the right.

Os27-OS24-OS31-Troy Village-OS83-OS32- Fair conditions, little snow cover, early riding conditions (Westfield to Troy)

Troy Village- OS32- Jay Village-OS78- Fields are good riding, the power line is rough with several ditches open.

OS78-OS34-OS25- Good riding conditions but has one or two rough areas.

In response to the posting on Facebook about not sending the valley cat out after this last snowfall of 5 inches. This past snowfall consisted of light fluffy snow that when compacted would have amounted to about 1 inch. When you can see grass showing in the fields I will not send out the groomer with the drag out of respect for our land owners. These landowners do not get any compensation for winter kill on crop fields cause by our trail system due to the lack of snow. It may be disappointing to some snowmobilers from the lack of snow but they need to look at the big picture. If these landowners didn’t grant us permission to use their land you won’t have a trail system to ride on.

Also when these landowners close the trail where will you be to help reroute and do trail work to get these trails back open. It is my opinion that we do a good job grooming as past years has shown. If riders can’t support our grooming decisions and respect our landowners maybe they need to ride in another area.
